             abstract = "The presente study is about the Geographic Information System in 
                         coastal environmental management and has Port of Santos as the 
                         object of study. The objectves of this project are to analyze the 
                         GIS in coastal and port management, to diagnose the positive and 
                         negatives factors, and to discuss GIS as a management system. The 
                         coastal ecosystem needs to be preserved for environmental balance. 
                         The environmental management is being developed in many countries 
                         and the GIS system could help answering environmental questions, 
                         focusing on economic growth and environmental preservation. The 
                         Projects methodology is based on GIS literature researche, data 
                         base from government sites, laws, regulations and official 
                         docments from the coastal and environmental port 
                         managementreports. Informations about thepotentiality of working 
                         methodology in coastal zone that can be to applied on Porto de 
                         Santos subdivided in: tools used by CODESP in the Port of Santos, 
                         Ship Management, Territory Management, Accident Management and 
                         Marine Monitoring. The Port of Santos has a lot of information 
                         that can only be composse in GIS. An information management 
                         platform can be created and used as a basis for GIS projects with 
                         different themes. Ivestiments are needed in tools and people to 
                         feed Porto de Santoss database. The political incentive is needed, 
                         because the informations would be provided quickly and efficiency, 
                         supporting the decisions in the management of the port.",
